Purple Garlic from Las Pedroñeras

The native ecotype "Purple from Las Pedroñeras" (which belongs to the variety "Morado of Cuenca"), is the bulb of the specie Allium sativum L, preserved by the Protected Geographical Indication.

The ecotype "Purple from Las Pedroñeras" is a variety adapted to the special conditions of the climate and the soil of the zone where it is cultivated: Las Pedroñeras. This ecotype, even having the same genetic characteristics of the variety which it belongs to, presents morphological an physiological differences in its development. They are due to the physical environment.

According to the classification of varieties made by Messiaen in 1974 based on physiological criteria (budding, maturation and release of scapes), the ecotype "Purple from Las Pedroñeras" has an average strength of sprouting (40-70 days), and its ripening cycle is medium to late

The plant from the ecotype "Purple from Las Pedroñeras" has an average height of 80 to 85 cm. and it reaches a thickness at the base of the stem of 15 mm. diameter. It develops between 12 and 14 leaves of 3-3,3 cm width. It is an upright variety and it has a fully developed stalk. The leaf colour is deep green.

Its development cycle is medium to late: about 190 days in normal sowing and cultivation conditions. The sowing takes place between December and January, and  gathering between June and July.

The bulb or head of "Purple Garlic from Las Pedroñeras" is spherical or round and of average size. The outer skin is white or slightly coloured and it is striated. The skin protecting the cloves is a characteristic violet or deep purple colour and also striated. The cloves are small or of average size, crescent shaped and yellowish white in colour. There are no peripheral cloves.
