Acreages used for farming

The "Purple Garlic from las Pedroñeras" acreage takes up around 5,000 and 6,000 hectares every year, which represents the 50% of all the garlic cultivated in Castilla-La Mancha. The sowing is carried out in the natural region composed by La Mancha, Mancha, Mancha Alta, Mancha Baja, Manchuela and Center.

Currently, there is no official data which describe in detail the production of garlic ecotype "Purple from las Pedroñeras".

Purple Garlic from Las Pedroñeras geographical area

The main production center of the "Purple Garlic from Las Pedroñeras" is in the area bounded by the areas of "Las Pedroñeras": La Alberca de Záncara, Mota del Cuervo, El Provencio, Santa Mª del Campo Rus y San Clemente, all located in the province of Cuenca, in the natural region of "La Mancha Baja". From this core, "garlic producers" farmers are moved to other places to lease new land with similar climatic conditions. That allows a wide crop rotation, spreading to the surrounding areas placed in the provinces of Castilla-La Mancha: Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Toledo.

Today, the production, handling and packaging area comprises two hundred and twenty-seven localities in the districts of La Mancha, Mancha, Mancha Alta, Mancha Baja, Manchuela and Centro, in the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Toledo in the Autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha.
